Joe is a native of Pittsburgh and a 32-year Blacksburg resident.
He started teaching yoga, informally, while taking groups to Cuba some
12 years ago. Doing yoga in Cuba is one of his favorite things to do because the light is so special there! During 2014-15, he continued to teach yoga in Aarhus, Denmark, with other Madame Marie Curie Fellows at Aarhus University.
In June 2017, he completed the In Balance Yoga 200 Hour Yoga Teacher Training. Since his Yoga Alliance certification, he has taken yoga workshops on teaching yoga to cancer patients and those suffering from trauma. As of early 2021, he has completed over 1500 hours of instruction.
Joe lives near the studio and is delighted that the only two scooter/motorcycle spaces are, apparently, reserved for him. He shares a home in the Highland Park neighborhood with his wife Gilda Machín and his dog Coco. They have a beautiful view of Paris Mountain and the Ellett Valley, a perfect setting for yoga and meditation. Their heavily wooded lot contains three bonfires circles.
