My first impression upon meeting Nicole on Zoom is that she’s the kind of yogi I will never be: radiating calm, wisdom, and peace. She’s soft-spoken and gentle, and she’s talking about energy medicine and auras, spoons on the soles of our feet and chakras that are suspended in thin air. I’m a skeptic who needs to remind herself to be open, and I’m torn between cynicism and prying open my closed mind.

But then she talks about embodiment and how everything is energy. I love that stuff. My ears perk up, and I sit up straighter. My cynicism is starting to crumble. She strikes a chord about our nervous system being on high alert all the time—isn’t that what’s been happening to me? When she talks about perspective and suggests, instead of asking “why is this happening to me” to focus on “where (in the body) is this happening to me?” she echoes what my therapist has taught me, and which has proven to be very effective. Cynicism? What cynicism?

And then she says this, which I haven’t been able to stop thinking about: “Everything happens FOR you, not TO you. It’s for your evolution and highest good.” Boom, mic drop.

When she stands up and invites us to hug ourselves in this specific way to calm down our nervous system—left hand on right ribcage, right hand on left elbow—I close my eyes, and I feel calm descend upon me. I feel safe, and loved, and held. And I remember: change starts with me. Feeling mad at the world isn’t helping the world nor me. Feeling bad about it also isn’t helping; I can observe it, acknowledge it, and then move on.

That’s the power of yoga. And the power of a skilled yoga teacher.
