Painting the Inner Landscape:
A Yoga and Creativity Workshop with Matt Belay
October 30th and 31st, 2010

Matt
Belay was born and raised in Southwest Virginia, where he was steeped
in the arts from an early age. He ran the Student Art Association at
Virginia Tech and was an integral part of the Mountain Lake Workshops
that brought major artists, including Merce Cunningham and M.C.
Richards, to share experiments in creativity with the local community.
For the last twelve years he has lived on four continents and traveled
to more than fifty countries to study spirituality, community and
creative expression.
Matt began teaching creative expression in 2005
with the Institute for Art and Living based in Marin County, Ca. He has
taught and assisted workshops in cities all over the country and at
retreat centers, including Eselan and Omega Institute under the
tutelage of Stewart Cubley and The Painting Experience. He is excited
to have the opportunity to bring all that he has learned back to his
hometown to share an exciting and important workshop.
This two
day intensive workshop integrates the physical and spiritual aspects of
yoga with the creative imagery of expression through paint. "There is
an opportunity to be found with creativity to see deep within ourselves
and then dare to express what we find." No experience of yoga or
painting is needed as everyone is a beginner. All too often the journey
of the yoga practice is left in the studio; at the end of the class the
feeling of inner awareness unable to translate into the outside world.
Here you will take yoga "off the mat" by using the tools of paint,
brush and paper to express your personal journey and bring it into the
physical world with color, shape and form. Integral to this work is a
feeling of safety and facilitation that Matt has honed over years of
working with groups that allows total freedom without judgment or
critique. The goal is inner awareness and freedom to express whatever
comes from within.
All supplies are provided and you need bring only comfortable clothes in which you can sit, stretch and paint.
On Saturday, the
course will begin with an opening circle to explain the work followed
by a body centering yoga practice led by Becky Crigger. There will then
be an introduction to the use of the paint and materials and a painting
session. We will break for lunch for an hour and a half, meeting again
in the afternoon for another painting session and finish the day with a
video.
Sunday will begin earlier in the morning, following the same
general schedule except that we will have a closing circle to finish
the day.
